Reasons for a Bar Mitzvah: For the Parents

1. You get to shut up your parents or in-laws who wonder if your son “really knows he’s Jewish.” It’s not the only reason, but it’s a nice side benefit.

2. You get to demonstrate to your son that you’re proud of him by displaying that to the world. He won’t appreciate it, but when does he ever? Still, you can try. Unless he explicitly asks you not to have a Bar Mitzvah for him, he’ll notice it if you don’t—especially if he has Jewish friends who, week after week, are inviting him to theirs.

3. You get to flaunt it. The image of the overdone Bar Mitzvah, with the lavish reception, the pricey eats, the stars of Cirque du Soleil at the reception, the appearance of Li’l Kim for the kids and the London Philharmonic for the adults, is a tired cliché. Which doesn’t mean you can’t do it. If you want to show family, friends, and business colleagues that you’ve had worldly success, or you want to look as though you have, this is as valid a pretext as any.
